The Evansville City Council has recently approved several initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s sustainability, housing options, and infrastructure.
Solar Energy Collaboration
In a move to reduce utility costs and promote renewable energy, the council approved a resolution for the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) and the Climate Collaborative to jointly fund the installation of solar panels on 17 city properties. Council President Ben Trockman highlighted the potential for significant long-term savings, stating, “When we’re all looking at budget constraints—to see an opportunity for the city to save significant funds to an investment in solar is very exciting.”
Housing and Development Projects
The council also advanced several housing and development projects:
- Authorized lending proceeds to Goodin Bowen for a mixed-use development at 6933 Vogel Road, featuring two four-story apartment buildings connected by a gateway bridge, at least 3,000 square feet of commercial space, and 153 apartment units.
- Approved $200,000 in funding to Memorial Rental Housing for a shovel-ready housing project, with further details to be announced.
Infrastructure and Public Safety Enhancements
Additional measures include:
- Adoption of the Evansville Regional Trails Master Plan to improve connectivity and promote outdoor activities.
- Support for the formation of a Southwestern Indiana Solar Co-op to encourage community participation in solar energy.
- Approval of up to $7 million in casino funds to establish a city-led ambulance service, set to begin operations in July 2026.
These initiatives reflect the council’s commitment to sustainable development, enhanced public services, and improved quality of life for Evansville residents.
